Guide to parents: Should my 8 year old player be in A League (register as 7/8 year old) or AA League (register as 8/14 year old)?

  • Parents of 8 year olds (on 8/31/2019) can choose to have their player play in either BYB's A League or AA League. Below is some information to help parents make that decision.
  • The A-league focuses primarily on teaching fundamental baseball skills. We use slower pitching machines, play games, but we don't keep score. It's the right place for a kid who is just learning the game or who needs to build up confidence
  • AA League is our introduction to more competitive baseball. We keep score and have playoffs. We use pitching machines, albeit a bit faster than in A League, and kids to pitch, too, as the season evolves. It's the right place for a kid who has developed some basic skills such as, for example, catches a slowly tossed ball, throws a ball straight, has swung a baseball bat; and, shows enough confidence and is likely to enjoy putting  these skills to work and developing others in a bit more competitive situation than A League.
  • All 7 year olds (on 8/31/2019) will play A league and most of the 8 year olds (on 8/31/2019) will play AA league.  But AA is not the right place for all 8 year olds and there will be a few 8 year old beginners who will play A.
  • AA is a two year league, and almost all 9 year olds play AA. Any child that chooses to play in A league in order to develop skills this year will rejoin with 9 year old colleagues next year in AA League.
