Spring
BYB spring programs provide playing opportunities for all baseball players living in Boorkline or attending Brookline public or private schools from first grade through age 15 regardless of skill level. Players are placed in appropriate levels by grade through grade 3 and by age and skill level beginning at 10 years old as summarized below.

Young Families New to BYB

Instructional League – Grade 1

Open to 1st Graders, the instructional league is a non-competitive introduction to the game of baseball. The league is intended for a wide range of abilities including both experienced and first-time players. We focus on having fun while teaching the fundamentals of the game: throwing, hitting, fielding, catching, basic game play and sportsmanship. This is a coach-pitch league, but tees are used as necessary for instruction. Teams will meet two afternoons per week (M-W or T-Th) at 5:30 PM for either well-organized, fast-moving practices, or 90 minute games. Additional games scheduled on Sundays in May and June. No standings, just fun!

AA League – Grade 2

Open to 2nd Graders, AA ball builds on the skills that players began to develop in the Instructional League.  The AA League is open to both experienced and first-time players.  Emphasis is placed on having fun playing baseball and developing the fundamentals of the game: throwing, hitting, fielding, catching, and sportsmanship.  Players will also be taught position-specific skills and will play the catcher position for the first time. This is a non-competitive, coach-pitch league. Teams will meet two afternoons per week (M-W or T-Th) at 5:30 PM for either well-organized, fast-moving practices, or 90 minute games. Additional games scheduled on Sundays in May and June. No standings, just fun!

Minors – Grades 3 and 4

Open to 3rd and 4th graders who have successfully mastered the basic skills of baseball, this is a developmental, fun, competitive league. Teams are mixed-school, giving players a chance to make friends in different parts of town. An important place for kids to learn pitching, and hitters to learn to hit kid-pitch, the Minors League is more focused on the rules of baseball, playing to win, and learning good sportsmanship. Teams of 12-13 players in a moderately competitive league with 3 practices/games per week. A tryout is necessary (see “Tryouts,” below) for player evaluation in order to build balanced teams.

Major B – Grades 4, 5 and 6

Open to advanced 4th graders, and 5th– 6th graders who demonstrate greater proficiency in baseball skills and are ready for advanced development and playing experience. Scores and standings are kept, teams are mixed from across Brookline, and many great friendships begin here. Players in Major B often compete in the Summer and Fall competitive leagues. Coaches focus on specific position play, pitching effectiveness and hitting strategies. Teams of 12-13 players in a competitive league with playoffs, 3 practices/games per week. A tryout is necessary to make this league (see “Tryouts,” below) and teams are built through a managed draft that favors league parity.

Major A – up to league age 12*

BYB’s most competitive league for 5th and 6th graders who perform at the top of their game. This league features a limited number of spots (72) and six teams, with excellent strategic play opportunities for the serious player. Players in Major A often compete in Summer and Fall competitive leagues. Teams of 12 players in a highly competitive league, standings, playoffs and up to 4 practices/games per week. A tryout is mandatory (see “Tryouts,” below) and players are drafted by Major A coaches. (Players who have been previously drafted are not required to attend a tryout and remain with their team.)

* League Age: a player must be 10, 11 or 12 years old on April 30 of the current year.

Seniors League

Seniors League is developmental as players convert small-diamond abilities into big-diamond skills. Players participate in a town league. For players 13 – 15 years old who have in eye on either long-term recreational play, or developing skills that will advance them to AAU and High School competition. Tryouts are required for placement, and Major A or Major B (or equivalent) experience is strongly suggested. Players are age eligible if they are 13 on April 30 of the current year, or are in 7th grade.

Brookline Knights (AAU)

For players 13-14 years old who desire a more competitive, travel baseball program with year-round activities, Brookline Knights are part of the New England AAU Baseball League. Teams are formed in the fall. Registration for Brookline Knights is not handled through the BYB website, instead please   baseball team and/or visit theBrookline Knights web site.
